Au Revoir Les Enfants

(Goodbye children)

World War II. The holocaust. A painful time for many, horrifying to those of us who are fortunate enough to have been born in a post colonial world. It is unfathomable for today's generation to ever imagine what life was like, how each day saw you lose those close to you, and how, as each day passed you felt less human and more animal. Life was cruel.

Now, imagine a life in that time, being French, and most importantly NOT A JEW. A child on the brink of adolescence. Facing all those troubles felt even today, troubles all of us have faced. The movie chronicles all this. A French child in boarding school at a Christian run institution. Meeting new kids. Making a new best friend. Harbouring your new best friend's secret which could cost him his life. For he is Jew. At that time this was the worst crime conceivable. Harbouring a Jew was the crime punishable by death. The movie progresses and I don't want to reveal the end, even though I doubt any of you will end up watching it. To me the movie marked the epitome of the cruelty inflicted by Hitler and his SS on a group of innocent people, their supposed crime: that they were Jews, and thus of a different race. However I don't think that most of the other people in the film appreciation hobby enjoyed it, for once the movie finished there were three of us watching. The two teachers and I. Clearly illustrating that in today's age people would rather watch city slick losers dancing around on a TV screen than watch anything remotely enlightening. For those of you who don't fall in this category watch the movie. Its called   "Au Revoir Les Enfants. Its in French but subtitled. I doubt finding a copy will be easy but maybe you could borrow it from our film appreciation teacher.
