Visit to the Qutb Minar

With our hearts craving for adventure, to explore the long forgotten secrets of the past, in the……well…..scorching heat of Delhi's monsoon(?), we the rather enthusiastic children of class seven, paid quite an interesting visit to Delhi's pride, the Qutb Minar. What was it that went through the minds of those mighty emperors, while they built this magnificent tower? What is it for? A watch tower? A minaret? Whatever this mighty monument was built for, it surely showcased the majestic might of Islam, and really left us children spellbound. It was not only the Qutb Minar which left us enchanted but the other amazing and magnificent structures that are housed in this sprawling complex --- The Alai Darwaza, the Ali Minar, Iltutmish's tomb, the Iron Pillar, the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque to name a few. Just imagining the sight of thousands of ox's carrying the iron pillar all the way to Delhi amazed us to an unimaginable extent. And those intricately carved pillars, and the latticed stone walls of the Quwwat-ul Islam mosque…were they really stolen from 27 Hindu temples? This just shows us how dedicated those mighty rulers had been to make their kingdom the most elegant and beautiful of all. Our volley of questions was never-ending, and I guess we had really irritated the teachers by the time we left. But what could we do? In the midst of such magnificent monuments, trapped in a whirlpool of such enchanting history, searching for every opportunity to discover something new, we always had a question or two languishing in the corner of our minds. Our visit to the Qutb Minar, was a true learning experience, an enchanting affair. And after all this, I would just be amazed if you don't have a question to ask us…
