Sunita Williams at VVS -
sharing her space experiences! A few of the questions asked by our students which were answerd by Sunita Williams What should be the roadmap for young aspiring students like me who want to become astronauts? Mriudang Mathur (6C) A. Great question! Most of the astronauts are from science background. You should study physics, chemistry, and math and get some information about space. What experiments are you going to conduct on the blood samples that you collected in space? How is this beneficial for the future technology of space? Tara Sen (9C) A. The gravity influences all activities inside our body. We don't know what is happening without gravity. Testing the blood samples can give an idea about the metabolic processes without gravity and may be we can develop some different type of foods for the astronauts. Space terrorism is at this point simply a myth but do you think it could ever be transformed into a terrible reality? Diva Gujral (11) A. I don't know anything about space terrorism. All space expeditions are for peaceful purpose and I don't think space will be ever used for terrorism and we should not think in this line. How did you feel when you came out of zero gravity to gravity? Arushi Shakuja (7 ) A. That was a little shocking. Just walking around was a little bit tough. After landing, I took my gloves and helmet off. It was very heavy. But I was doing lots of exercise when I was up there, so we got used to it pretty quickly. When you are on earth, you can't escape gravity, so your body starts realizing that you are back. How does one weigh oneself in space? Ananya Trehan (7B) A. Good question! We have little weighing device and it involves some mathematical calculation. In your view how does space exploration help the common man? Soumya Dasgupta (11) Many useful things have been invented in space, which are used on daily basis. Going to space makes you look at things differently. Secondly, ISS is a marvel engineering project. It has countries all over the world working together, sharing technologies very peacefully to make one product. So I think if we can do that on our space travel, it has a calming role other than fighting with each other. Do you feel your 195 days stay in space affected you spiritually? Tarannum Marya (9) A. Absolutely! From the ISS as you look out, there are no boundaries. The blackness is three dimensional. My father also used talk about Mahatma Gandhi. His ideas are boundary less. We wonder about our place in this universe and what we are doing. Space is being considered for monitoring ecological misbehavior but this would mean infringing on our rights of privacy. What is your opinion on this? Shreya singhal (11) A. Oh, that's interesting! I know that space satellites are used for remote sensing to help us potentially grow and to live better on earth. I don't know about invading our privacy. I think the benefits of the satellites for food production through remote sensing is great.
