Tendulkar- Finally the selectors got it right

After our inconsistent display at the latest edition of the cricket world cup, it was certain that Mohd. Azharuddin would be relieved of the Indian captaincy. His tenure which was split up in two parts can be described as a period of extreme ups and downs which on the average can be termed as satisfactory. At times this wristy batsmen showed extreme class and control, and at other times he seemed helpless and without focus. The holds good for his batting as well as his captaincy. He was not an aggressive captain, but still boasts of the best record for an Indian captain ever in both forms of the game. His captaincy was however destined to end as all things do, it was time to let a new face take charge of the Indian cricket team.

Eyes fell on Ajay Jadeja to take charge, especially in the one day form of the game. He had captained India in Sharjah, when Azhar was injured and had led India into the final. Those matches leading up to the final showed that he definitely had some rare leadership qualities, specifically his light but dedicated approach. The problem for the selectors arose in the fact that if they appointed Jadeja captain he could only captain the one day side as he does not have a fixed place in the test team. The selectors would have to chose a different test captain. It is very unwise to have two different captains. It causes conflicts within the team and can leads to a change in focus. Therefore it was wise of the selectors to look at the other various options that they had.

The only two names that I can seriously consider for a single Indian team captain are Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble.

Rahul Dravid may come to mind but he still has a few years to go before he can be seriously considered for captain. Anil Kumble has lead Karnataka well in the past, he has claimed the the Ranji Trophy for his domestic side. He has been vice captain in the past and is known to have a good cricketing brain. For me however Kumble might just be a little to intense of a cricketer to become the captain. He has what it takes to be good captain, but he lacks the dynamism and "magic" that is the making of legendary captains.

Sachin Tendulkar is not new to the job of captaincy, in his first "term" as captain he did not live up to expectations. Let us forget that as I feel that at that time he was not mentally ready for the captaincy, he was not mature enough. It was however a good learning experience for him. He has the brain, the class, and the leadership qualities that are essential for any captain. Tendulkar has that "magic", the magic that has won lost games and left the world awe-struck. He is also mentally ready now. This can be seen in the way he talked to the selectors. Sachin Tendulkar wants his independence, and is ready to lead the Indian team to many a victory. He is the right choice for captain and he has the potential to go down in history not only as a legendary batsmen, but also as a legendary captain.
